Recruiting FAQ

  • An information session is a great way to present your company as a whole and what opportunities you have available to our students. They are typically held in the evenings during the week, and are open meetings to all of our students (you can specifically market to certain students). You are left with the freedom to create a presentation that best displays your company. Some companies will have video/slide presentations, a discussion from panelists, or a Q&A discussion.

We schedule all of our information sessions using Handshake. You can get specifics about requesting an information session here! Once you have submitted a request, a Recruiter Experience Specialist will review the details and be in contact with approval within 2-3 business days. They will communicate further details on advertising your event on campus, location, and other specifics at this point.

  • We recommend arriving 15 minutes prior to your scheduled starting time. When you arrive for your information session, head directly to the assigned room. Many of your event specifics, such as the room location, will be communicated to you before your arrival. You will then be greeted by a recruiter experience specialist who can help with any set up or answer questions you might have.

As students arrive, the recruiter experience specialist will check-in students via Handshake. This is necessary for recording attendance information, as well as provides you with general information about the students who attended the session such as their name, email, and major.
  • Students are highly motivated to attend an information session if food is being served. This is a common and successful tactic for recruiters. If you are planning to bring food for students, please note that all food provided to students on-campus must be approved by BYU. BYU Careers and Experiential Learning takes no responsibility in ordering or serving food at your event.

BYU Food to Go offers many varieties of food and snacks, or you can consult the list of approved off-campus caterers. If you have further questions or concerns, please contact your designated recruiting experience specialist or recruiting@byu.edu.

  • On-campus interviews are a feature in Handshake that enables you, as the employer, to hold interviews on BYU campus. You are required to have a Handshake profile to request an interview room and schedule. We offer different interview schedules you can request: Room Only, Preselect Continuous, and Open.

Interviews provide the opportunity to connect individually with students in a professional campus environment. This is a great way for companies that are not local to meet with students in person for interviews. We recommend holding interviews after attending a Career Fair or hosting an information session on-campus. This would provide you with the ability to connect with potential candidates before your scheduled interview.

  • We offer 3 types of interview schedules.

Room Only - This is the most popular option among employers. This option provides you with a reserved room and you control the rest. Once you request this option, a recruiter experience specialist will confirm with you the date and the reserved room location. You will be responsible for building your own interview schedule, finding and scheduling students to interview, and communicating your schedule with students.

Preselect Continuous - This interview schedule must be linked to a current Handshake job posting. It provides you with the opportunity to look through the applicants and then approve the students you would like to interview to sign up for time slots prior to the day of the interview. This is beneficial if you have more connections with departments, multiple applicants, and time prior to your interviews to build a schedule. This will require more hands-on work from the recruiters side as you will need to look through and approve the candidates before they can sign up for a time slot. You will be assigned a reserved room on campus and then you will be able to build your schedule on Handshake.

Open - This interview schedule must be linked to a current Handshake job posting. This interview schedule provides you with a reserved room, creates the schedule for you, and then any student who qualifies for the job attached to the schedule can sign up for one of the time slots. This schedule would benefit the companies who are just beginning to connect with BYU.

  • A complimentary lunch, drink, and snack are provided when conducting on-campus interviews! A recruiter experience specialist will assist you in ordering your specific meal the morning of interviews. If you would like, you can also request to have lunch with BYU career directors or related faculty, providing a great opportunity to further foster recruiting relationships. For any specific requests, please reach out to your designated recruiter experience specialist or recruiting@byu.edu

  • All that is provided for a tabling session is a table (average 6’ long), two chairs, and a backdrop/divider. Each booth/table also has access to an electrical outlet. You would need to bring your recruitment gear and anything else that could make you stand out to the students. Some optional supplies that are more likely to bring attention to your booth are large, visible signs with your company name/logo, small snacks or treats, and clear ways for students to get involved. This could be any open internships or positions, upcoming information sessions, or preparatory steps students can accomplish to apply in the future.
