Recipe for Standing Out
Career fairs work best when you prepare before you go, make intentional connections during the event, and follow up afterward.
Before the fair
Arrive with a plan, a polished resume, and a clear reason for talking with each employer.
- Craft a short, confident elevator pitch about who you are and what you’re looking for.
- Research target companies on Handshake and know why you are interested in them.
- Update and polish your resume, then bring several printed copies.
- Practice talking through your experience, skills, and resume highlights.
- Prepare thoughtful questions to ask recruiters.
- Prioritize employers you want to visit and plan your route.
- Bring a notebook or folder so you can take notes during conversations.
- Dress professionally and align with industry expectations.
During the fair
Make each conversation intentional, professional, and easy for recruiters to remember.
- Introduce yourself confidently with a smile, clear eye contact, and a professional greeting.
- Use your prepared pitch, but keep the conversation natural.
- Ask thoughtful questions and listen closely to what representatives share.
- Show genuine interest in the organization and the roles they are hiring for.
- Collect recruiter contact information, business cards, or LinkedIn information.
- If a representative cannot answer your question, politely ask who you should contact next.
- Take quick notes after each conversation so you can follow up personally.
- Stay professional, courteous, and engaged throughout the event.
After the fair
The follow-up is where a good conversation can become a real opportunity.
- Send personalized thank-you emails or LinkedIn messages to contacts you met.
- Reference specific topics from your conversation so they remember you.
- Apply for roles or internships that match your interests and qualifications.
- Review company information before interviews or follow-up meetings.
- Attend related info sessions, campus events, or industry meetups.
- Connect with recruiters and engage professionally with their content when appropriate.
- Update your notes with next steps, deadlines, and contacts.
- Meet with a Career Director if you want help deciding how to follow up.
